Combined Parshiyot: Nitzavim / Vayeilekh

We read two Torah portions this week so we can get through the entire Torah by the end of the year

Nitzavim (Stand), Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20
This is one of the shorter Torah portions. It tells of the forging of a covenant between G-d and the Children of Israel, and includes many well-known statements of basic Jewish principles: that the Covenent was made not just with the ones standing there but also with those who will be born in the future; that this Torah is not in the heavens or across the sea that you have to send somebody to get it, but it is right there in your heart and in your mouth; that G-d has put before us life and death and encourages us to choose life.

Vayeilekh (He Went), Deuteronomy 31:1-31:30
This is another very short Torah portion as we approach the end. Moses anticipates his passing and the transfer of authority to Joshua. The Torah is given to the Priests to put in the Ark, and will be read in full to all men, women and children every seven years (in the sh'mitah year, the year when the land lies fallow and debts are released) during the festival of Sukkot. It warns that the people will go astray, but these words will be a witness against them.

The haftarah is for 7th Haftarah of Consolation, Isaiah 61:10-63:9. This passage is full of themes of victory and rebuilding.
