The Torah portion is Ki Teitzei, Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19. In synagogues using the Triennial system, 5784 is year 2 and the Torah reading is Deuteronomy 23:8-24:13.
This parshah lays out an enormous number of specific laws, some of which are shocking to modern minds (rules about marriage to a woman taken captive in war), some of which are routinely misquoted and misrepresented (no, it is not a violation of Jewish law to wear a poly-cotton blend), and some of which are actually very impressive even by modern standards (a rule about making the roof of your home safe so that no one will fall from it to their death; rules restricting procedures for debt collection). The haftarah is for 5th Haftarah of Consolation, Isaiah 54:1-10. This passage compares the People to a barren forsaken wife, and assures that the People will be brought back and made fruitful.
