Parshat Ki Tisa (When You Take [a census])

The Torah portion is Ki Tisa, Exodus 30:11-34:35. In synagogues using the Triennial system, 5784 is year 2 and the Torah reading is Exodus 31:18-33:11.

This parshah contains a number of well-known highlights of the Torah, including the sin of the Golden Calf; Moses shattering the original Ten "Commandments"; Moses asking to see G-d's glory and G-d saying that mankind cannot see His face but only what comes after Him.

The haftarah is I Kings 18:1-18:39. Like the Torah portion, this story involves false worship, where Ahab, a king of Israel, led the people to worship Baalim, and Elijah proved their god to be false, and humiliates the false prophets by telling them to pray louder, because their god may be in conversation or sleeping.

In synagogues using the Sephardic tradition, the Haftarah is I Kings 18:20-18:39.
