Parshat Re'eh (See)

The Torah portion is Re'eh, Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17. In synagogues using the Triennial system, 5783 is year 1 and the Torah reading is Deuteronomy 11:26 -12:28.

"See, this day I set before you a blessing and a curse, a blessing if you follow the commandments and a curse if you turn to other gods and follow their ways." Much of it talks about offerings and where and how they must be brought. Speaks of false prophets who entice people to worship other gods. Lays out rules for identifying kosher meat, fish and birds and not eating meat with dairy. Lays out rules of sh'mittah (remission of debts and freeing of slaves in the 7th year). Ends with a mention of the three Festivals: Passover, Shavu'ot and Sukkot.

The haftarah is for 3rd Haftarah of Consolation, Isaiah 54:11-55:5. Reassures the people that things will go well for them. "You shall be established through righteousness, you shall be safe from oppression, and you shall have no fear."
