Parshat Bamidbar (In the Wilderness)

The Torah portion is Bamidbar, Numbers 1:1-4:20. In synagogues using the Triennial system, 5782 is year 3 and the Torah reading is Numbers 3:14-4:20.

This is the first parshah of the Book of Bamidbar, known in English as Numbers. The Hebrew name of the book, as with all parshiyot, is simply the first distinctive word in the parshah. This parshah provides a genealogy of the families as well as counts of healthy adult men and specifies the arrangement of the encampments. It also speaks of Aaron's descendants and the location, duties and branches of the tribe of Levi.

The haftarah is Hosea 2:1-2:22. This passage begins by saying that the number of the Children of Israel shall be like the sands of the sea, reminding us of the extensive counting in the Torah portion.
