Parshat Toldot (Generations)

The Torah portion is Toldot, Genesis 25:19-28:9. In synagogues using the Triennial system, 5782 is year 3 and the Torah reading is Genesis 27:28-28:9.

This parshah tells of the lifelong struggle between twin brothers Jacob and Esau, from the time they struggled in Rebecca's womb, to firstborn Esau selling his birthright to Jacob for some lentil stew, and Jacob disguising as Esau to get his visually-impaired father's blessing, Esau's plan to kill Jacob, and Jacob's flight to his uncle Laban. There is also a story of Isaac's time with Abimelech that very much parallels his father Abraham's time in Egypt.

The haftarah is Malachi 1:1-2:7. This passage begins with a reference to Jacob and Esau, tying it to the Torah portion
