Parshat Vayechi (He Lived)

The Torah portion is Vayechi, Genesis 47:28-50:26. In synagogues using the Triennial system, 5782 is year 3 and the Torah reading is Genesis 49:27-50:26.

This portion tells of Jacob/Israel's adoption of Joseph's two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim (giving Joseph a double inheritance), his final words to his sons and his death and burial, and Joseph's death and embalming in Egypt. It also gives his last words about his 12 sons, after which he dies, and is taken to be buried with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebeccah and Leah, as he requested, and the death of Joseph. This is the final portion of the Book of Genesis! Hazak! Hazak! V'Nit'chazek!

The haftarah is I Kings 2:1-12. This passage tells of the death of David and his final words to Solomon, which connects to the Torah portion with the death of Jacob/Israel and his final words to his sons.
